Driver killed on Lodge Freeway in Southfield while helping victims of two-car crash

A driver was killed Saturday night on the Lodge Freeway in Southfield after stopping to help people involved in a two-car crash, Michigan State Police said.
State police said a two-car crash left one vehicle blocking two southbound lanes of M-10 near Nine Mile Road. A passing motorist stopped on the right shoulder, got out and crossed the freeway to try to help the people involved.
Another vehicle traveling on the freeway swerved to avoid the wreckage and struck the driver, state police said. The person who was killed has not been identified.
State police responded at 11:39 p.m. Southfield police and Southfield Fire Department Emergency Medical Services also responded and tried to save the driver, including performing CPR, police said.
The driver who struck the pedestrian stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to state police. Police said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor based on immediate indications.
The freeway was closed during the investigation and reopened at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. Michigan State Police said the crash remains an active investigation.
