University of Detroit Mercy cancels classes, evacuates North Quad and Holden Hall after suspicious packages found

Suspicious packages found on the University of Detroit Mercy campus led to the evacuation of two residence halls and the cancellation of classes on Oct. 13.
North Quad and Holden Hall, both on the south end of campus, were evacuated after the university sent an alert around 5:30 p.m., according to a university spokesperson. Students living in other residence halls were told they could stay in their rooms.
Detroit police and the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Public Safety cleared the campus by 8:30 p.m., the university said. All students were allowed to return to their dorms.
Classes at the university, located along Livernois and McNichols on Detroit's northwest side, were canceled for the remainder of the day. The university said classes and activities resumed as scheduled on Oct. 14.
No information was released about what the packages contained or where authorities believed they came from.
The University of Detroit Mercy has six residence halls housing about 800 students. Updates were sent through the school's RAVE Emergency Alert System, the spokesperson said.
