Canton daycare parents face charges after toddler brings loaded gun to Sheldon Road center

Both parents of a toddler found with a loaded handgun at a Canton daycare are expected to face charges, Canton Township police said.
The parents were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, Oct. 1 before Judge Joe Barone in Plymouth’s 35th District Court, police said in a statement. Police had not identified the parents but said the father is a police officer in a neighboring community.
Officers were called Sept. 28 to Children’s World’s Early Learning Center at 7437 Sheldon Road after staff discovered the child had the weapon in a backpack. Police Chief Joseph Bialy said the gun was holstered. Staff removed it from the child and called police.
Children’s World said it is adding new safety measures, including backpack checks. The center said the child is no longer enrolled.
The daycare said its teachers acted quickly and that no one was hurt.
“Nothing is more important to us than the safety, security and well-being of the children entrusted to our care,” the center said.
Canton police said the investigation is ongoing.
